English Oak Gateleg Coffee Table

English Oak Gateleg Coffee Table

This antique style gateleg coffee table is handmade in England from solid wood by a team of master craftsmen. From the techniques used to the materials themselves, this English coffee table exhibits the highest level of quality available in the world of antiques and reproductions. The selection of solid oak displays a striking grain and rich, lustrous complexion, complemented by a lovely border of optional flame mahogany, satinwood, rosewood or yew wood, and a hand-distressed, spokeshaven (or hand-planed) surface. Spokeshaving, like the gateleg design itself, is an old furniture-making technique that English craftsmen have been using for many centuries, extending far back before sanding became popular alongside this ancient, time-honored technique. The sturdy legs are available in a variety of types, including round turned, square-tapered, French and twist, while the skirt on either end of the coffee table is shaped quite beautifully. The great advantage of the English gateleg coffee table is that the leaves drop down to the sides of the table for easy movement, storage, and versatile utility. If you need more table space while company is over or if you need to maximize the space in your room during normal use, this English coffee table can adapt to either situation, making this table a great asset. This strong antique style English gateleg coffee table will last for centuries, continuing to grow more beautiful all the while, so taking one of these tables home with you would be a real investment!

Paradox of Technology 1/2

Paradox of Technology 1/2

You know something is different this time as you make your way home. The road is only being dimly illuminated by the eerie glow emitted from the street lights’ slow, soft flicker. Something is definitely amiss.

As you arrive home you realize that your electronic key is not working. Odd, you think to yourself. But you quickly perform a manual override and get the door working. It opens and you find your home engulfed in a thin gloomy fog. Could the heating system be malfunctioning as well?

You try to switch on the lights but all you get is the same flickering you noticed earlier with the street lamps. Why? As you make your way to your room you briefly catch a glimpse of something white moving in the corner of your eye. You turn to look but it’s gone. However in that brief moment you noticed, it seems to you that it went around the corner and down the hallway.

For a split second you consider whether to investigate what you think you just saw or to leave. You are afraid as you recall the sequence of oddities that led up to now. However, your juxtaposition of conflicting emotions gives way to curiosity. This is your house after all and why should you be afraid?

You start walking more briskly in an attempt to make up for the few seconds spent deliberating. As you round another corner, this time you see very clearly a small white object about the size of a wallet speed past a bend and into a room. It is moving too fast for you to make out what it is.

Now breaking into a run, you rush through the fog in hot pursuit; any fear you had long forgotten. You dash into the dining hall with the full knowledge that you’re going to find out what is going on as the hallway is the only passage into this section. The place is now empty and quiet. Where did it go?

It is at this moment that you once again catch a glimpse of moment in the corner of your eye. Startled, you turn around to observe that the object is your computer mouse speeding across the dining table. Why is it moving? It’s not supposed to be able to move. Why?

As you stand there temporarily frozen, you suddenly feel a sharp pain course through your body. Overcome, you fall to the ground and turn around. It is your household robot, Maria. And from her hand extends a long knife, glimmering in the flicker of the faulty lights.

Suddenly it all comes together. The malfunctioning equipment at the office. The traffic lights that went crazy earlier in the morning. The news reports of military robots going berserk. Everything technological that was supposed to function that did not.

Realization strikes: the machines are beginning to take over. Though, it is too late for you to do anything at this point as you lay on the floor slowly fading from existence. Of all the things that could have killed you, how could you have ever predicted that in the end you would die in such irony?
